Transforming a ‘diamond in the rough’ to become an antique dealer’s dream home
Ms. Thiele was looking for a home in Bellevue for herself and her son when she came across a nondescript older house with a large yard. As an antique dealer, she recognized it as a diamond in the rough. As an avid gardener, the yard echoed the same possibilities. So the adventure began – we examined the structure and found it sound, explored some different options for improving the livability, and developed a whole new look with lines true to the home’s original era.
The ceiling in the living room was raised to a shallow vault, tying in nicely with the new arched entryway. Beyond, the foyer and stair to the lower level were carved out of a former bedroom. The classic kitchen overlooks the rear garden, and a new bump-out incorporates a sunny area with room for kids to hang out and guests to sit and talk to the cook.
Adding 16 feet to the west side of the home allowed space for a family room with a cozy window seat, and access to the front porch. This new wing also houses the master bedroom on this level. On the previously unfinished lower level, two new bedrooms make the most of the space in the 16-foot addition. Beams and decking allow for more visual height where the ceilings are low.
