The Deardens moved to the Seattle area from England and yearned for a home with the solidity and charm of the places they grew up in. They were quite keen for their home to be sustainable and include such features as rain water catchment, ground-source heating, and a wall system with full insulation and recycled content. They also have an affection for energy efficiency and a more modern lifestyle.
The 12 inch thick Durisol walls were chosen because of their high recycled content, fireproof quality, and energy efficiency. They also have the visual advantage of giving the window openings an additional depth and allowing a nice play of light. Traditional Lime stucco covers the outside walls, and clay plasters on the inside. The metal roof retains longevity and ensures cleaner water for the cistern.
