Lia Sommer

Lia interned with Living Shelter for two years before being promoted to drafter, and now provides technical support on both client projects and general operations while continually learning more about sustainable design and building. Her greatest passion is creating homes for people while respecting the environment.

Previously, Lia co-founded the Hangzhou Permaculture Educational Center, the first permaculture educational site in China. While there, she focused on teaching permaculture and natural building to low-income students through work-trade opportunities and building demonstration projects. In the states, Lia has taught natural building workshops and gardening classes and has given presentations about sustainability for large community organizations.

Lia earned a bachelor’s degree in Chinese language and literature from Zhejiang University’s International Business School. Originally from Hangzhou in southeast China, Lia loves learning through hands-on activities and sharing what she knows with others. In addition to English, Lia is fluent in Mandarin, her native language.
