Straw Bale Workshops

NEW Announcement - 2008 WORKSHOP!

Our clients, Michelle Miller and Gary Parker, have asked us to teach a Straw Bale Workshop at their new home in Pendleton, Oregon this summer. We will be teaming with Habib John Gonzales of Sustainable Works for a 5-day intensive geared to the construction & design trades professional, although the owner-builder will come away with a wealth of information they can use as well.

The Workshop dates are August 4-9, 2008 (moved from earlier announcement of July), opening with an evening presentation and slideshow on the 4th. The next morning we start on the site with the bales. Through the week, you will learn both the history of bale building and what works today, how to satisfy building officials, and how to employ bales to build in a production setting.

The workshop fee is $525, with a $150 deposit, and a $25 discount if registered before June 1. We are arranging campsites nearby at Emigrant Spring State Park, as well as hearty lunches on site each day.  Both campsites and lunches are included in the fee.

Space is limited, so please register early to reserve your spot.  Download the registration form below, or email us at info@livingshelter.com or call us at 425-427-8643 to request a registration form.

Workshops cover theory, design, codes, site issues, foundation, and moisture mitigation particularly as it applies to the northwest. They are many hands-on opportunities to stack bale walls, make custom size bales, prepare walls for finishes, and create detail elements.

If you are interested in sponsoring a straw bale workshop on your site, please contact us regarding requirements.
