Dearden Residence

Dearden home

The Deardens moved to the Seattle area from England and yearned for a home with the solidity and charm of the places they grew up. However, they also have an affection for a more modern lifestyle. They were quite keen for their home to be sustainable and include such features as rain water catchment, ground-source heating, and a wall system with full insulation and recycled content.

Living

Dearden home

The living room is comfortable without being cavernous. A slightly vaulted ceiling highlights the fireplace. A large reclaimed timber now serves as a showpiece mantel, and reclaimed wood flooring covers the radiant heated slab.

Dining

From the kitchen, the living room is visible through the dining space - connected enough for interaction while having a sense of seclusion and peacefulness.

Wall

For the wall system we chose Durisol because of its high recycled content, fireproof quality, and energy efficiency. The walls are 12 inches thick, giving the window openings an additional depth and allowing a nice play of light. Traditional Lime stucco covers the outside walls, and clay plasters on the inside. The metal roof retains longevity and ensures cleaner water for the cistern.
